All orthodontic patients are at a higher risk of developing tooth decay. Many studies and years of clinical experience show that in-office application of fluoride is beneficial to the health of your teeth. It is recommended that patients visit their dentist every 6 months for cleanings and fluoride treatments. Here at Khouri Orthodontics, we are going one step further and offering a fluoride varnish application for patients.

This fluoride varnish can be applied between visits to your regular dentist. The treatment delivers fluoride, calcium phosphate and a protective coating to your tooth surface. The varnish only takes seconds to apply and goes on white, so it’s virtually invisible. Patients are asked not to brush or floss for at least 4-6 hours, eat soft foods, and avoid hot drinks and products containing alcohol.

The application of fluoride varnish is an effective measure in reducing white spot lesions. This is another protective measure that our office takes in order to help prevent decalcification (white spots) during orthodontic treatment. We cannot prevent all white spots from developing on the teeth, but when good oral hygiene is paired with the use of fluoride varnish, this may further reduce the decalcification.
